Ataxia UK - neurological disorders

Overview

Helpline open Monday - Thursday 10:30am - 2:30pm

Ataxia is the name given to a group of neurological disorders that affect balance, coordination, and speech. There are many different types of ataxia that can affect people in different ways.

Anyone of any age can get ataxia, but certain types are more common in certain age groups. For example, people with Friedreich’s ataxia are usually diagnosed in childhood or adolescence.

Ataxia UK works in two main ways: they fund research into finding treatments and a cure for ataxia, and they offer support to people through their range of services.

At Ataxia UK we work with many children and young people who have ataxia. Friedreich's ataxia, the most common inherited type, usually starts in children and young people. If you are a parent and would like to put in touch with another family, please contact us on the helpline: 0844 644 0606

The Children and Young People’s section of the main website contains a film that is designed to help newly diagnosed young people understand what their diagnosis means, what they can do to improve their lives, and where they can go for more help and advice. Follow this weblink (opens in new tab) for more information.
