Remedi - Victim and Offender Mediation and Restorative Justice Initiatives

Overview

RJ is a way of helping victims of crime express how they feel about what has happened and gives offenders the opportunity to take responsibility for what has happened. Communication can take place; indirectly, a worker acts as a go between, passing on information either verbally or through a letter between the victim ad offender, or directly, when a victim and offender decide to meet following careful preparation. This would take place in a safe and neutral place in the presence of Remedi staff.

The service provided is for those aged over 18 and it is a free, confidential and impartial service. The service is funded by the Police and Crime Commissioners.

Taking part in RJ is voluntary for both sides.

The possibe benefits for the victim; have questions answered, explore feelings resulting from the crime, tell the offender how the crime has effected them, receive an apology, reduce the fear of crime and further victimisation.

The possible benefits for the offender; take responsibility for their actions, explain why they acted as they did, confront the effects of their offending on the victim, apologise, chance to make amends and put the offence behind them.

RJ is not something that we ‘do’ to people, it is something we do with them. It is their process and their experience.
