What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a nationally recognised training programme that combines paid work with learning and skills development. You’ll work towards an approved Apprenticeship Standard while gaining hands-on experience in a real job.

Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 16 or over. They’re available at different levels, from entry-level (Level 2) through to degree (Level 6) and Masters (Level 7) qualifications.

They can suit a wide range of people — whether you’re starting your first job, looking to progress in your career, changing paths, or returning to work after a break.

Key features of an apprenticeship

  • A paid job with a structured training programme
  • Lasts a minimum of 12 months, with at least 20% of your time spent in off-the-job training
  • Builds skills in English, Maths, and your chosen area of work
  • Leads to recognised qualifications and full occupational competency
  • Can support professional recognition, depending on the role or industry
