Local Maternity Services
Most mums-to-be in Nottinghamshire receive care in pregnancy from midwives and obstetricians (doctors who specialise in pregnancy) linked to Nottinghamshire’s hospitals:
- Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust (Worksop)
- Sherwood Forest Hospitals Foundation Trust (Sutton-in-Ashfield and Newark)
- Nottingham University Hospitals Foundation Trust (City and QMC)
Most women receive between 7 and 10 appointments in pregnancy, which usually start when you are 8 to12 weeks pregnant and continue until the birth of your baby.
A complete health and wellbeing assessment will be made at the mother’s first appointment and is reviewed throughout the mother’s pregnancy.
Mothers are offered screening tests and ultrasound scans to identify any health problems that could affect them or their babies. The NHS have created an animation about screening test, visit Screening tests in pregnancy (NHS)
Midwives review the mother’s mental health, promote infant feeding, bonding and attachment, and also support mothers to stop smoking.
When they are around 28 weeks pregnant, mothers will be offered a visit from their Healthy Family Team. The team focus on preparing emotionally for the birth, caring for the baby, parenting and attachment, and will identify any mothers that need additional support.
