Co-producing SEND services for the future

The Children and Families Act 2014 requires local authorities to involve children and young people with disabilities, and their families, in discussions and decisions about their care and education, as well as in the design and review of services.

Co-production brings together service users and professionals to help review and develop services for the future for those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

It provides us an opportunity to develop closer relationships with those who use our services, so we can make decisions together.

Our approach to co-production at Nottinghamshire County Council

Children and young people with disabilities, and their families, have told us they'd have more confidence in our co-production approach if it involved the following.

  • My voice being the first voice - This provides opportunities for the child or young person to have their voice heard in any process that involves their welfare.
  • Starting together - This establishes a common understanding about what is to be achieved.
  • Listening - All views are listened to and acknowledged.
  • Valuing real life experiences - This treats those who use services as experts in their own field and learn from their life experiences.
  • Communicating effectively - This builds positive relationships with service users and partner organisations.
  • Transparency and honesty - We should be willing to share difficult decisions.
  • Flexibility - To tailor our approaches to individual needs.
  • Willingness to consider a range of options - We should be willing to compromise to reach an agreed shared understanding.
