Job Description
Hours: 10 hours per week (2 x 3-hour sessions and 1 x 4-hour session)
Preferred Times: Afternoons (not Wednesdays)
We are seeking a caring, reliable and patient Personal Assistant to support an adult with a range of physical and learning disabilities to access their local community and enjoy activities of their choice.
About the Person
The individual has a learning disability. They are also diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, which causes right-sided weakness and no functional use of their right arm.
In addition, they live with arthritis, which particularly affects the joints in their hands, fingers and toes, as well as Autism, Anxiety and Depression.
They have capacity to make their own decisions and are very independent-minded. While they can process information well, they may sometimes require support to identify and manage certain risks, such as handling very hot items or assessing temperatures safely.
The person's mood and anxiety levels can fluctuate. They may become highly anxious at times and can fixate on worries, particularly regarding future care arrangements and separation from their mother, with whom they have a strong attachment. A calm, reassuring and understanding approach is essential.
Mobility and Support Needs
Mobility varies from day to day. The individual uses a crutch for support when walking, but on more difficult days may be unable to walk and will use a wheelchair when out in the community, particularly for longer distances.
Support is required to access the community safely, assist with mobility when needed, and encourage participation in activities.
Individual needs help regarding money & remembering any items they have taken out with them.
The individual would like support to:
- Attend their local gym
- Go shopping
- Enjoy trips out in the community
- Visit cafés and restaurants for lunch
- Build confidence and independence outside the home
Initially, support will focus on community access and social activities. In the future, the role may develop to include personal care support once a trusting relationship has been established. Additional hours would be requested if personal care support becomes part of the role.
A driver with access to their own vehicle, as transport is essential for community access
